This data insight presents occupational employment patterns for the Greater West of England, defined here as Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Swindon and Wiltshire.

Professional occupations accounted for 29.9% of employment in the Greater West of England, compared with 25.5% in England excluding London. Managers and senior officials represented 12.3% of employment in the region compared with 10.7% in England excluding London, while associate professional and technical occupations accounted for 16.6% compared with 14.8%.
Lower shares of employment in the Greater West of England were recorded in administrative and secretarial occupations (7.7% compared with 9.5% in England excluding London), sales and customer service occupations (4.2% compared with 6.2%), and elementary occupations (8.5% compared with 9.5%).

Four occupation sub-groups accounted for 36.8% of employment in the Greater West of England in 2024. These were science, research, engineering and technology professionals (10.7%), business, media and public service professionals (9.1%), corporate managers and directors (9.0%), and business and public service associate professionals (8.0%).
In comparison with England excluding London, the Greater West of England recorded higher shares of employment in science, research, engineering and technology professionals (10.7% compared with 7.8%), business, media and public service professionals (9.1% compared with 7.4%), and corporate managers and directors (9.0% compared with 7.2%).
Lower shares were recorded in administrative occupations (6.4% compared with 7.9%), sales occupations (3.4% compared with 4.7%), customer service occupations (0.8% compared with 1.5%), and elementary administration and service occupations (7.6% compared with 8.3%).
