Housing affordability ratios across local authorities in the Greater West of England, 2024
This data insight presents the median affordability ratio for local authority areas within the Greater West of England in 2024. The Greater West of England is defined here as Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) publishes annual housing affordability statistics measuring the ratio of median house prices to median workplace-based gross annual earnings.
House price data are based on the House Price Statistics for Small Areas (HPSSA) and relate to a 12-month period with April at the midpoint of the reference year. Earnings data are sourced from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE).
The affordability ratio is calculated by dividing median house prices for existing dwellings by median earnings of full-time employees working in the same area.
Higher ratios indicate that house prices are larger relative to earnings.
