This data insight presents the number and proportion of high growth enterprises in the Greater West of England between 2019-2024. Comparisons are provided with England, England excluding London and the UK.
The data is drawn from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) annual Business Demography statistics, which includes estimates of high growth enterprises. High growth enterprises are defined as enterprises with 10 or more employees at the start of a three-year period that achieve average annualised employment growth greater than 20% over that period.
The year shown represents the final year of the three-year growth period. For example, 2024 refers to growth between 2021-2024.
The Greater West of England is defined here as Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire, Swindon and Wiltshire, including its non-metropolitan districts.
Enterprise counts are subject to disclosure control and are rounded to base 5.

In 2024, proportions ranged from 3.57% in Swindon to 7.26% in Cheltenham (Gloucestershire).
Among the unitary and upper-tier authorities, Bristol recorded 6.33%, South Gloucestershire 5.29%, Bath and North East Somerset 4.69%, North Somerset 4.40%, Wiltshire 4.11% and Swindon 3.57%.
Gloucestershire recorded 5.79%. Within Gloucestershire’s non-metropolitan districts (the lower tier of a two-tier local government structure, operating under a non-metropolitan county council), proportions ranged from 4.55% in Gloucester to 7.26% in Cheltenham.
For comparison, the proportion was 5.04% in England and 4.62% in England excluding London.
